Bedeutung von Rad-Hard-Qualifizierungen bei nicht wartbaren Raumfahrtsystemen

Originaltitel: Rad-hard qualification matters more when space systems cannot be serviced

KI-Zusammenfassung

Space electronics have to keep working where repair or replacement may be impossible. That makes radiation performance, traceability and long-term availability closely connected procurement concerns rather than separate technical checks. Infineon says its radiation-hardened power semiconductors are supporting NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The observatory is intended to operate around the Sun–Earth L2 point, approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, for a mission lasting several years. The announcement provides a current reminder of the demands placed on power-management components in long-duration missions. Radiation claims need context A radiation-hardened label is not enough on its own. Engineers should check the relevant total ionising dose, single-event effects and displacement-damage evidence against the expected orbit, shielding and mission duration. The test method, lot controls, package and electrical operating conditions can all affect whether the evidence applies to a particular design. Early agreement on these parameters can reduce later qualification uncertainty. Where programmes refer to military specifications such as MIL-PRF-19500 , buyers should confirm the exact qualification level and supporting documentation required by the customer. Commercial, automotive, radiation-tolerant and fully qualified rad-hard parts may each have a place, but they should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions. “For long-duration programmes, it is sensible to check radiation evidence, provenance and lifecycle status together, before an approved component becomes difficult to replace,” said Damian Semple. Further reporting on the deployment also points to the importance of qualified power conversion and distribution. Procurement teams may benefit from mapping approved part numbers, alternates, documentation and remaining production life early. Storage history and handling records should be reviewed alongside certificates and traceability. Astute can help customers check current pricing and authorised availability, and its global sourcing network may help identify traceable pockets of stock for difficult requirements without weakening the programme’s evidence trail. Long programme lead times make configuration control particularly important. If a manufacturer changes a die, assembly site or test flow, the programme may need to assess whether earlier radiation data still applies. Monitoring change notices can provide time for review, requalification or a planned last-time buy.
